Forensic Human FactorsAccidents on the road, in the factory, in business or in the home can be caused by a combination of factors including the inadequate design and organization of workspaces, equipment and procedures. On the roadway there may be insufficient light to see pedestrians at night, difficulty in perceiving closing speed and judging gaps or fatigue or distraction leading to inattention. In buildings, stairs and handrails may be poorly designed or maintained, lighting may be inadequate, signage may be missing or unclear, procedures may be poorly explained, dangerous surfaces or objects may intrude into the workspace, and the tasks to be accomplished may require cognitive demands (perception, memory and thinking) beyond the training or abilities of the people who are required to do them. HFN’s consultants are trained in cognitive psychology and are experienced in applying cognitive analyses to the situations that led to traffic, industrial, commercial and domestic accidents, with the goal of both explaining the causes and suggesting remedies.
